    Early Literacy (Kinder, 1st, 2nd)

Early literacy is the cornerstone of education success. In their first years of elementary school, students learn to read so they may read to learn in later years. HEB ISD monitors early literacy progress in Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade using three assessments from the Amplify Reading 3D system:

    • DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) - a formative assessment of five foundational literacy skills: First Sound Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency, and Oral Reading Fluency
    • IDEL (Indicadores Dinámicos del Éxito en la Lectura) - a formative assessment series of measures designed to assess the basic early literacy skills of children learning to read in Spanish
    • TRC (Text Reading and Comprehension) - an early literacy formative assessment that goes beyond foundational skills to assess students' understanding of what they read

Teachers monitor student progress throughout the year. The chart below represents the percentage of students at each grade level who are at or above expectations for achieving future reading success without additional targeted intervention.

Note: This data is aligned to Success Measure 1.2B in HEB ISD's Strategic Plan and is based on end-of-year assessments.
